Yes Man
Do you remember the Jim Carrey movie “Yes Man”? It was a pretty funny movie
about a man who is at a standstill in his life. During a self-help seminar, he is presented
with the challenge to say “yes” to everything that comes his way. Almost overnight, he
sees the radical difference that saying “yes” to things brings into his relationships,
business, etc. Where he often found himself afraid, now he was bound by the response
to accept whatever challenge presented itself.
Now, of course, Jim, or Carl in the movie, quickly found out the problematic side
of agreeing to everything. But several years ago, my pastor had preached on this idea
of saying “yes” to the Holy Spirit whenever we felt prompted. He challenged us that if we
start saying “yes” instead of giving excuses and reasons why we should not obey or
follow his promptings, then we would quickly see how wonderful he is and how much we
can trust him in those moments. He encouraged us to take a step of faith and the next
time God spoke we would do exactly as we were being directed.
I was intrigued by this idea and decided to give it a shot. I recognized that I often
talk myself out of little things the Holy Spirit highlights. This is often out of fear- fear of
embarrassment, fear of rejection, fear of failure- whatever excuses I can come up with.
The following Wednesday night service during praise and worship, I felt the Holy
Spirit directing me to the woman behind me. I felt like he was telling me to go speak to
her and let her know that it was ok to feel joy again, that she needed to let go of her hurt
and let God fill her with his peace and gladness. Now, I knew this woman. She had
been in my Bible study and I knew that she had recently lost her husband. It felt like this
was the most inconsiderate thing for me to tell this grieving widow. Plus, she was on the
other side of the sanctuary! I would have to get out of my seat, walk all the way around
while everyone watched me, and then get her attention and speak to her while worship
was happening. I of course explained all of this to the Holy Spirit in case he hadn’t
considered these things himself.
But, he was persistent and he reminded me of the vow I had made that Sunday
to be obedient. As I mumbled, “You better not stand me up, Lord”, I awkwardly shuffled
out of my seat and across the church. I laid my hand on her shoulder and I could see
the surprise all over her face. I took a deep breath and started, “This may seem strange,
but the Holy Spirit wanted me to tell you that it’s ok to feel joy again. You don’t have to
be ashamed of it. He wants to fill you once more.” As I said the words I saw her heart
break wide open. I could feel the walls of it crumbling. We hugged and I prayed over her
before heading back to my seat.
That was a good one, God! Way to go! But he wasn’t done. As soon as worship
was over, the pastor took the pulpit and started with, “Tonight, I want to talk to you
about joy.” What?! I quickly glanced back at the woman and we were both teary-eyed
and grinning ear to ear. This was definitely a God moment and all the confirmation we
both needed.
He has done that several times in my life. He presents the challenge and it’s up
to me to accept it or excuse it. But when I trust him, when I take that step of faith, he
has never not met me. I may not always get an immediate confirmation like I did that night, but I’ve never regretted following what the Holy Spirit has placed in my heart.
That’s how we build our faith.
I want to encourage you with a Jim Carrey movie this month. The next time the
Holy Spirit prompts you to do something- maybe it’s to give a person some change,
maybe it’s to offer prayer to a stranger, maybe it’s to stay quiet during an argument
instead of speaking your mind- whatever it may be, challenge yourself to say “yes”.
Trust the Lord and see if he doesn’t show up. As you do, your faith will build and you’ll
look forward to those times when the God of the Universe wants to use you. It blows my
mind! Isaiah 6 verse 8 says: “Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a
messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.”
You Are Loved!
