Pouring Seasons
Pouring Seasons
Life Matters- June 2023 Blog
By Casandra Orsburn
Have you ever experienced a “pouring season”? You know, “When it rains, it
pours.” We just got back from “vacation”. I say it that way because if you have children
you understand that you always need a vacation to recover from your vacation. On our
trip back to California we all ended up with the stomach flu, I left my laptop in our cabin
and did not realize it till we were a full days journey away, I experienced my very first
fender-bender as I rear-ended a pickup as I was looking the other way to yield, and
when we returned home we discovered our septic backed-up, a toilet had flooded a
bedroom closet, and we had several dead fish to deal with in our pond (that is a story
for another time). When it rains, it pours!
Maybe you have experienced something like this when it feels like you just can’t
catch a break. Money is stretched thin and one more thing falls apart. Relationships,
health, finances- they all seem to be under attack. You take two steps forward only to
feel as though you’ve been knocked back three. If you aren’t dealing with a particular
crisis at the moment, you either have or will have in the future so I wanted to take the
opportunity to use my personal calamity as a testimony of God’s faithfulness.
I admittedly don’t handle stress well. Instead of becoming a glowing image of
peace and calm floating ethereally into the room to pour that life-giving water onto the
licking flames of disaster, I am more a pin-ball machine bouncing and bobbing every
which way and heaving hefty sighs as if the sheer wind of my pouts will extinguish the
flames. As I was zig-zagging all over my house the day after our return, washing
laundry, shampooing carpets, bagging fish, and giving every member of my family the
stink-eye who was caught in the act of some sort of unproductive service, the Holy Spirit
began to remind me of His presence.
As He reassured me of His sovereignty I began to see a bigger picture. Yes,
these things were inconveniences. Yes, they could be stressful. Yes, they could even
be quite costly. But God. I’ve always loved that pause. But God is bigger. But God is
faithful. But God sees the need before I do. But God knows the outcome. But God
makes all things work together for my good. But God knows the good plans He has for me.
When I began to get my focus off of the negative things going on in my life, even
though they seemed so big, and I began to magnify the Lord and His goodness, my
perspective shifted. What felt like one overwhelming blow after another, became fiery
darts skillfully directed by the enemy to distract, worry, and cause me to fear. Not today,
Satan! I choose to rejoice in the struggle because I know that God is going to use what
the enemy meant for evil and turn it for good. I know that my God is going to make a
way where there was no way and He will get the glory for it!
And so today I want to encourage any of you that may feel as though you are
going through a storm that God is for you. It may be something small or it may be
something so big that God is the only one who can come through on this… trust Him.
When we magnify the Lord and His love and character, then every struggle and trial
becomes so small in the light of His goodness. Don’t let the enemy have a foothold! Say
it right now to yourself, “God, I trust you. I may not know how you are going to work this
out, but I trust that you see and you love me. I trust that you are a good God. I refuse to
give the enemy one more moment of my peace. I praise you in advance, Lord, for the
testimony that will come from this. Amen!”
I pray that this season for you is a “pouring season”. Not the pouring out of
disasters and frustrations, but the pouring out of God’s presence. Even in the struggle
He is there. Just because life seems to be going in the wrong direction, don’t for a
second think that God is not with you. In fact, it’s often those “pouring seasons” that set
you up to allow God to take you to a new step in your relationship with Him. So sit back,
take a deep breath, and let it pour!
You Are Loved!
